SDI Open Water

What getting started looks like

This film from SDI shows what Open Water is about: the first breaths underwater, the first exercises, the first open-water dive. With me it takes as long as it takes for you.

The film comes from the training agency. It only loads once you allow external media.

How the course runs

You work through the digital theory between sessions. Difficult topics are discussed online or in the vaulted cellar in Herrenberg.

In confined water you learn to handle your equipment, mask, regulator, buoyancy and ascents. The open-water dives follow. The sessions can be spread across several weekends.

From a real course

Three moments from an Open Water course.

No stock footage. These clips are from a course at DiveWithSteini: getting into the water, the first calm moment underwater, and the part that comes after the drills.

01
Into the water, and the first OK at the surface.
02
Calm trim, eye contact, OK. The moment it clicks.
03
After the drills: just diving.

Four to eight dives in open water

The SDI standard requires four open-water dives, each at least 15 minutes, and at least 80 minutes in total. I plan for four to eight. Which number it turns out to be for you is not decided by the calendar, but by how confident you feel in the water.

Up to the eighth dive, the price does not change. So four is not a target you have to hit, and eight is not a bad sign. If you would like further sessions beyond that, we discuss it beforehand. No chargeable part of the course happens without your agreement first.

As a pair

Two participants pay €999 per person. The course is planned so that neither of you has to constantly wait for the other or rush through exercises.

Requirements

Before the course begins, a medical questionnaire and the water competence required for the course are necessary. Relevant answers on the health questionnaire require medical clearance.

Plan your Open Water

Tell me briefly whether you have dived before, which region you are from and which days of the week usually work for you.

Before you sign up

How your first session works

The most common reason someone does not enquire about a course is not the price. It is not knowing what will actually happen. So here it is, before you have to ask.

  1. We talk beforehand

I ask about your certifications, your diving experience, your health, your own equipment and your goal. Not as a form, but as a conversation. After that I know where we start, and you know what is coming.

  2. You do the theory when it suits you

You prepare the theory digitally, at your own pace and from home. Whatever stays open we go through online or with me in the vaulted cellar. You will not sit in a seminar room or a weekend course.

  3. We meet at the base on Hasenplatz 4

The historic vaulted cellar in Herrenberg is the starting point for theory, equipment and preparation. Where we get into the water depends on the course. That is settled before the date, not on the morning itself.

  4. You help build up the equipment

We assemble it together instead of handing you a finished set. I explain the regulator, the jacket or wing and the hand signals we will need in the water. If you know how something fits together, you will also notice later when something is off.

  5. Into the water in small steps

There is a briefing before every dive. We start in protected, shallow water so you can get used to breathing through the regulator in peace. Every task is broken down so it stays manageable on its own.

  6. If something does not work, we repeat it

If a skill does not hold, we break it down further and do it again. Repetitions within a normal scope are included in the course fee. There is no reason to fake something that is not yet reliable.

  7. At the end we talk it through

Right after the session you get feedback: what already works reliably and what we will work on next time. Certification comes when the skills are solid, not when the dates have run out.

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a towel
  • Something to drink and a small snack
  • Your certifications and logbook, if you have them
  • Your own equipment if you have any. Otherwise I will lend you everything
  • Your questions. Including the ones you think are silly.

And what will not happen

  • No group pressure. There is nobody you would have to keep up with.
  • No time pressure. A session does not end because the next group is waiting.
  • No pushing on against your own judgement. You say stop, we stop.
  • No certification on request. A card you cannot live up to will not help you underwater.

If anything is still open, just ask me beforehand. That is exactly what the preliminary conversation is for.

How your open-water dives unfold

Four dives, one pace: yours. You plan each dive together with Sven, run your own checks and take on more responsibility from dive to dive. By the fourth dive you are not being guided any more. You are diving, with someone alongside who lets you.

The photo shows exactly that: a certified diver in open water, relaxed, in control, with a buddy in sight.
