Planned staged decompression: the theory, the procedures and the routines that keep an ascent predictable. The course trains you for dives to 45 metres.

What it costs
This course requires a separate cylinder for the decompression mix. Rental equipment beyond the usual set is stated before you commit.
What you need to bring
These three points come from the TDI standard and are not negotiable. If one of them is missing I will tell you before you enrol, and we work out what comes first.

- SDI Advanced Adventure Diver, Advanced Diver or equivalent
- Proof of 25 logged open-water dives
The moment this course is about: the ascent is still ahead, and it has already been planned.
The course
Planning comes before the first dive: gas requirements, oxygen and nitrogen limits, the exact profile including the decompression schedule — and the plan for when part of it does not work out. In the water we practise the procedures until they still hold when things get uncomfortable.
- Buoyancy and trim carrying a stage cylinder
- Dropping and retrieving the stage, confirming the gas switch
- Deploying a lift bag solo and in the team, staged ascent on it
- Reacting to gas loss, a free-flowing regulator and an inflator malfunction
- Omitted decompression, extended bottom time, a missed up-line
- Written examination to finish
Equipment
The standard asks for more than the usual set on this course: a primary cylinder and a separate cylinder for the decompression mix, each with a first and second stage and a pressure gauge, plus a depth gauge and bottom timer or dive computer, an ascent reel with lift bag, a line cutting device, a jon-line, a slate and exposure protection suited to the water. We settle what you own and what you rent beforehand — and what the rental costs is fixed before you commit.
Honest about the scope
I teach this course as a stand-alone programme. The standard allows combinations that save dives, but every one of them requires TDI Advanced Nitrox — which I do not teach. If that is the route you want, I would rather say so now than offer you a combination I cannot certify.
The maximum training depth is 45 metres. This course is not trimix training and it is no clearance for hard overhead environments.
